regionDetail.overview

The East Coast encompasses roughly 14 states and stretches over 1,700 miles from Maine's Downeast coast to the Florida Keys. It was here that European colonization of North America took hold — Plymouth Rock, Jamestown, and the original 13 colonies. The region contains three of the five most populous cities in the United States (New York, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C.), four professional sports teams per major city, the country's oldest universities (Harvard 1636, William & Mary 1693, Yale 1701), and some of America's most spectacular natural landscapes including the Appalachian Mountains, the Blue Ridge, and Acadia National Park in Maine.

Best things to do in East Coast

1

New England Fall Foliage Drive

The Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia and North Carolina, or the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire — the most spectacular fall color shows in North America, typically peaking in mid-October in the north and moving south through November.

2

The Freedom Trail, Boston

A 2.5-mile walking trail through Boston connecting 16 significant Revolutionary War and colonial history sites — including Paul Revere's house, Old North Church, and Bunker Hill.

3

Appalachian Trail Sections

The 2,190-mile Appalachian Trail runs along the spine of the East Coast from Maine to Georgia. Day hiking to summits in the White Mountains (NH), Shenandoah (VA), or the Smokies (NC/TN) is exceptional.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended Period

April to June, September to November — Spring and fall offer ideal temperatures for the Mid-Atlantic and New England. Summer brings beach crowds and heat/humidity in the South. Fall foliage in New England peaks in October and is one of the country's great natural spectacles. Florida is best in winter (November-April) when temperatures are comfortable and humidity is low.

Food & Specialties

The East Coast has an extraordinary variety of regional cuisines that reward systematic exploration.

Maine lobster — the world's finest, sold at roadside lobster pounds, at their cheapest eaten outdoors on picnic tables

New England clam chowder — thick, creamy, and deeply satisfying

Philadelphia cheesesteak — the original and still the best, at Pat's or Geno's on 9th Street

DC half-smoke — the city's signature sausage at Ben's Chili Bowl

South Carolina pulled pork — the original American barbecue, with vinegar-based Carolina sauce

Miami Cuban sandwich — the compressed, pressed Cuban-American fusion sandwich

Florida stone crab claws — available October-May, best at Joe's Stone Crab in Miami Beach
